Highest run-scorers and wicket-takers at T20 World Cup

New Delhi: The 10th edition of world cricket’s grandest T20I party begins on February 7 and in the previous nine editions only a handful of players have consistently scored or taken wickets in the tournament.

Ahead of the T20 World Cup, let’s look at some of the key statistics from the previous nine editions of the tournament thus far.

Highest run-scorers:

The now retired Virat Kohli is the leading run-scorer in the tournament, accumulating 1292 runs in 33 innings of 35 matches between 2012-2024 at an average of 58.72 and strike rate of 128.82, including 15 centuries.

He helped India win the previous edition in 2024, having been the tournament top scorer in 2014 with with 319 runs in six matches, which remains the highest by any batter in a single edition of the competition.

Rohit was the skipper of the victorious edition in 2024 and he followed his long-time team-mate Kohli in announcing his retirement after they beat South Africa in the final.

He remains only second behind Kohli in the run-making list with 1220 runs in 44 innings of 47 matches between 2007 and 2024 at an average of 34.85 and strike rate of 133.04 with 12 fifties.

Former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene, who guided them to the final of the 2012 edition, remains third on the list of run makers with 1016 runs.

Between 2007 and 2014, the right-hand middle-order batter played 31 matches and scored at an average of 39.07 and strike rate of 134.74, hitting a century and six half centuries.

Highest wicket-takers:

Two spin-bowling experts are on top of the wicket-takers list, with Bangladesh’s left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan enjoying a substantial lead over Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi.

Between 2007 and 2024, Shakib claimed 50 wickets in 41 innings of 43 matches, conceding 1006 runs at an economy of 6.86, average of 201.12 and strike rate of 17.58.

Afridi took 39 wickets in 34 matches from 2007 till 2016, in 135 overs, at an average of 23.25 and economy of 6.71 and strike rate of 20.76.

Former Sri Lanka speedster Lasith Malinga is behind Afridi with 38 wickets in 102.4 overs in 31 matches till 2014, averaging 20.07, striking at 16.21 and economy of 7.43.
