Tom Moody has criticised Virat Kohli’s captaincy stint, calling it a disappointment. Moody, a veteran IPL coach, said that there were high expectations from the Indian legend.
Kohli captained India from 2015 to 2022. He replaced MS Dhoni as India’s Test captain in 2014 and kicked off his journey early in 2015. replaced Dhoni as India’s white-ball captain after he stepped down in January 2017. Kohli-led India failed to win an ICC trophy. But they did excel in Test cricket. With 40 wins in 68 Tests, Kohli is India’s most successful Test captain. He left Test captaincy in January 2022.
“The Virat Kohli era was an era of high expectation, but ultimately, disappointment,” Moody said on JioHotstar. Harbhajan Singh also shared his opinion on Kohli’s captaincy and said that they could have won three or four trophies.
“The kind of team Virat had, they could have won three or four trophies. If they did not win, there must be a reason, but I still think he had a solid team,” said the India legend.
Kohli captained India to the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy. The Men in Blue suffered a defeat against Pakistan in the summit clash. Kohli-led India made it to the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup, where they suffered a defeat.
India had a forgettable run in the 2021 T20 World Cup and they failed to make it to the second round. Kohli had already announced that he would quit the T20I captaincy after the ICC event.
The selectors wanted one white-ball captain and they sacked Kohli from the ODI captaincy in December 2021. Kohli travelled to South Africa as the Test captain while he played under KL Rahul (captain Rohit Sharma was injured) in the ODI series.
Kohli made the shocking announcement to quit the Test captaincy a day after the series defeat against SA. He played all formats under Rohit’s captaincy till 2025.
Kohli retired from T20Is in 2024 and left Test cricket in May 2025. He is now only active in ODI cricket. Kohli captained India to 65 wins in 95 ODIs. India won 30 out of 50 T20Is under him.
