How to Wash Heavy Saree at Home: The method of washing every cloth is different. We can easily wash light weight clothes at home, but expensive and heavily embroidered sarees like Banarasi, Silk and Kanjeevaram, which are worn for weddings and parties, like coats, sherwanis and special occasions, require a lot of care. Therefore, people often send them for dry cleaning.
However, now even dry cleaning of a saree costs more than Rs 100, and because of this, these sarees often remain lying in the cupboard. However, if you know the right methods, you can wash and clean your expensive and precious sarees safely at home. Let us know some easy tips which will help you in easily cleaning your heavy and expensive sarees at home.
Some easy tips to clean heavy sarees at home
First, read the care label
Every saree comes with a care instruction tag, especially on silk, georgette and velvet sarees. Read it carefully and check if it says dry clean only. If it can be washed gently, only then proceed.
use mild detergent
- Heavy sarees should never be washed with regular powder detergent, always use baby shampoo or special liquid cleaner for silk.
- First, fill a tub with cold water, dissolve detergent in the water, then add the saree. Soak the saree in this water for about 5 to 7 minutes and then take it out.
press gently instead of rubbing
Never rub or brush sarees with heavy embroidery, zari or sequins. Slowly move these sarees up and down in the water and apply light pressure on the stained area with your fingers. Putting too much pressure on these sarees can damage them quickly.
Home remedy to remove stains
If there is a slight stain on the saree, apply a few drops of lemon juice on the stain. Then, wash with cold water after 2 to 3 minutes. While using the lemon remedy, make sure to test it on a corner of the saree before applying it on the stain.

Take these precautions while washing clothes in the machine
If washing in a washing machine, first turn the saree upside down and place it in a washing bag. Then, select Delicate and Silk modes. Also, keep the spin option off or very low.

- Spread it on a towel to absorb excess water.
- Dry it in shade, direct sunlight may cause the color to fade.
Pressing and Storing Tips
Never iron silk or heavy sarees directly, keep a cotton cloth in between. Second, always fold the saree and keep it in a cotton cover. Finally, take out the sarees every 3 to 4 months and allow them to air.
