Heavy rains accompanied by a high wave alert predicted in Kerala for the next 5 days

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to receive heavy rainfall for the next five days with INCOIS warning of high tides and strong winds. Isolated rainfall in all districts of Kerala will receive moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds with speed reaching up to 40 kmph on July 21, 22 and 23 is predicted by the India Meteorological Department.

The Met department has sounded yellow alert in 9 districts today with strong winds associated with it.

A yellow alert indicates heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours. The IMD has urged people to exercise extreme caution while travelling, as visibility may become poor due to an intense spell of rainfall.

The Met Department has sounded a yellow alert for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod in view of the rain forecast.

Meanwhile, the Kasaragod district collector has clarified that no holiday was announced for educational institutions on Monday. Taking to his Facebook post, he warned against the circulation of fake news during school holidays. He pointed out that as IMD sounded a yellow alert for the district, all educational institutions will open for classes on Monday.

INCOIS sounds high wave alert

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has sounded a high wave alert along the coasts of Kerala on July 21. As per the alert, tidal waves are likely to rise to a height of 3.2 metres in Kappil to Pozhiyoor in Thiruvananthapuram, Alappad to Edava in Kollam, Chellanam to Azheekal in Alappuzha and Kunjathur to Kottakunnu coasts in Kannur and Kasaragod districts till 11.30 pm.

Fisherfolk are restricted from venturing into sea off Kerala coasts till July 22 due to the adverse weather conditions. INCOIS has issued a public advisory urging people to exercise extreme caution during tidal wave attacks. Coastal residents are advised to move to safe locations as directed by the local authorities. Beach-based tourism activities are also restricted until INCOIS withdraws the warning.
