Yellow alert issued in 8 districts

The Meteorological Department has issued Orange Alert in 6 districts of Kerala and Yellow Alert in 8 districts. Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts are at highest risk of rain. It has been raining continuously in Idukki since Saturday night, which has created a flood-like situation in many areas. In Nedumkandam, Kamili and Kattappana, flood water has entered houses and flooded roads. Relief and rescue teams are taking people to safe places.

Administration increased vigilance

The water level in Mullaperiyar Dam is rising rapidly due to heavy rains. Because of this the administration has increased vigilance. At the same time, the effect of rain is also visible in Tamil Nadu. Due to increase in water in the dams there, 13 gates of Mullaperiyar have been opened and about 1400 cusecs of water has been released. Water is also being released from three other dams to keep the situation under control. After torrential rains throughout the night, there is heavy waterlogging at Ernakulam railway station and surrounding areas. Rivers are in spate and at many places water has reached houses and fields. The administration has asked people living on the banks of rivers to remain alert. Many farmers’ crops have been ruined due to floods. Meanwhile, in view of the bad weather, fishermen have been advised not to go into the sea till October 22.

Heavy rain alert in Tamil Nadu too

According to the Meteorological Department, due to the low pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal, there may be heavy rain in many parts of the state for the next four days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected especially in the hilly areas of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Tiruppur, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. The administration has put relief teams on alert in these districts so that immediate action can be taken in case of any emergency.
