Healing patients by day, chasing dogs by order: Rajasthan doctors get additional new role

Jaisalmer: To make the premises a dog-free zone, a government hospital in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan has come out with the ‘Dog Removal Campaign’. Under this campaign, steps will be taken to ensure that dogs do not disturb patients who come to the hospital for treatments and regular check-ups.

Following the instructions issued by the Health Department in Jaipur, the senior doctors and officials in Government Jawahir Hospital in Jaisalmer district have decided to make the premises a complete dog free zone. Dr. Sardara Ram has been given the charge to make the premises free of stray dogs.

‘The safety of patients and their families is paramount’

Speaking about the initiative, Principal Medical Officer Dr. Ravindra Sankhla said, “The safety of patients and their families is paramount. Stray dogs are often seen loitering around the hospital wards, OPDs, and garbage bins, as if they have an appointment. This not only creates an atmosphere of fear but also poses a risk of infection and accidents”.

He added, “Dr Sardara Ram has been given the responsibility to completely stop the movement of dogs within the hospital premises and ensure that patients do not feel like they are part of a dog show during their treatment. Several concrete steps are being taken under this ‘Dog Removal Mission’”

Hospital to raise boundary walls

Sharing further details, Dr Sankhla added, “Wherever the hospital boundary wall is low, it will be raised to prevent dogs from jumping over. Gate management at the entrances will be strictly enforced, and the ‘open gate – open invitation’ approach will no longer be tolerated. Continuous coordination will be maintained with the Municipal Council. Dogs found on the premises will be safely removed and released far away, ensuring both humane treatment and the safety of the hospital.”
