The Directorate of School Education, Government of Haryana has advised adding ‘Yoga’ as an additional subject for class 11 students of Haryana Board of School Education (HBSE).
Directorate of School Education wrote to the Haryana Board Secretary Dr Munish Nagpal (IAS), recommending the inclusion of Yoga in the school curriculum.
A committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister to oversee this initiative.
Considering the request, a meeting was held last week at the Haryana School Education Board to discuss introducing Yoga as an optional subject in classes 11 and 12. The meeting was presided over by Board Secretary Dr Munish Nagpal and was attended by Haryana State In-charge of Patanjali Yoga Peeth Ish Kumar Arya, Registrar of Haryana Yoga Commission Dr. Rajkumar, District Yoga Coordinator (AYUSH Department) Dr. Sanjay Vaid, Senior Expert SCERT Gurugram Sanjay Kaushik, Patanjali Hisar member Vinay Malhotra, and Haryana Yoga Commission instructor Priyanka. The discussions focused on the overall development of students through the inclusion of Yoga in the syllabus.
Dr Nagpal highlighted that Yoga is an invaluable part of Indian culture and tradition. Teaching it at the school level will provide students with physical, mental, and spiritual balance. It will improve concentration, memory, and discipline, while also motivating them to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
He also emphasised that the subject teaching for Yoga should not be limited to bookish knowledge, but should contribute to the holistic personality development of students. A final decision on inclusion of Yoga subject in classes 11 and 12 is yet to be announced.
