Religious importance of Hartalika Teej

This fast is celebrated by Goddess Parvati in memory of the hard penance done to get Lord Shiva in the form of husband. It is said that on the day of Hartalika Teej, women meditate like Goddess Parvati performed a fast without consuming water and also worships Shiva-Parvati.

Mythology of Hartalika Teej

The word “hartalika” is made up of two Sanskrit words Harat (kidnapping) and Alika (Sakhi). According to the legend, the friend of Goddess Parvati hid her in the forest and prevented her from getting married to Vishnu, which led Parvati to receive Shiva. This festival is celebrated since then. The virgin women who fasten wishes for a good groom, and married women fast for the long life, happiness and prosperity of the husband.

Hartalika Teej Puja Vidhi

  1. Take a pledge to fast after bathing in the morning.
  2. Install the idol of earthen or metal Shiva-Parvati.
  3. Worship Shivalinga with fruits, flowers, belpatra, dhatura, sandalwood, akshat and water.
  4. Read or listen to the story of Hartalika fast.
  5. Wake up overnight and do bhajan-kirtan.
  6. The next day, after sunrise, pass the fast.
  7. Sleeping during the day is forbidden in this fast as well as night awakening.
  8. In this fast, there is a law to perform 5 Havan sacrifices in 24 hours.
