August 14: Canadian batting all-rounder Harsh Thakkar has been fined 30% of his match fee for expressing disagreement with an umpire’s decision during the ICC Men’s Cricket League 2 match against Scotland on Friday.
Thakkar was found in violation of Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to “disputing an umpire’s decision during an international match.” Additionally, two demerit points have been added to Thakkar’s official disciplinary record, marking his first offense within a 24-month period.
The incident occurred at the end of the 26th over when Thakkar showed visible frustration after his LBW appeal was rejected by the on-field umpire. He reacted by shaking his head and waving his hands. After receiving his cap back from the umpire, Thakkar gestured to his coaching staff outside the field, indicating that he believed the batsman was out.
Thakkar accepted the offense and agreed to the penalty proposed by match referee Graham McCree, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. The charges were officially laid by on-field umpires Gazi Sohail and Ian MacDonald, along with reserve umpire David McLean. Scotland showcased an impressive performance in this match, scoring 347 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their 50 overs. In response, Canada was bowled out for just 177 runs, with Scotland’s bowler Lyle Robertson taking 6 wickets for 52 runs in his 10 overs.
For a Level 1 violation, the minimum penalty is an official reprimand, while the maximum can be a fine of up to 50% of the player’s match fee and the addition of one or two demerit points to their record. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within 24 months, they face suspension points, which can lead to a ban from playing. A player may receive a suspension for one Test match, two ODIs, or two T20 International matches.
