Brendan McCullum, the head coach of England’s white-ball cricket team, believes that Harry Brook, who currently leads the team in ODIs and T20s, will eventually have his chance as Test captain.
Brook has been serving as vice-captain under Ben Stokes, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket. Following Stokes’ departure, Joe Root has been appointed as the new Test captain for the England team.
Stokes’ sudden retirement came after a disappointing Test series against New Zealand, which was marred by controversies. Initially, there was speculation that Brook would be entrusted with the captaincy across all formats. However, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to reinstate Root as captain instead of promoting Brook.
Speaking to Sky Sports about Brook, McCullum stated, “Everyone knows how much I value Harry Brook. He is an outstanding player and is doing a great job as captain of the white-ball team. I believe his time to lead the Test team will come. I am eager to work with him and help him develop into the leader he can be. His role in that capacity will be significant in the future. For now, Joe Root will do an excellent job.”
While McCullum will remain the coach for ODIs and T20s, Stephen Fleming has been appointed to take over as the Test coach. McCullum praised his former New Zealand teammate, saying, “My four years have been great, but now things are moving in a different direction. I believe Fleming will do an excellent job. He is somewhat like me, but better. I can only say good things about him. The ECB’s decision to keep him involved with English cricket for such a long time is truly remarkable. It is a significant achievement.”
