According to the Panchang, Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Paush month will start from 01:57 pm on Thursday, December 11 and will continue till 02:57 pm on Friday, December 12. Since the sunrise of Ashtami Tithi will be on Friday, December 12, the festival of Hanuman Ashtami will be celebrated on this day.

There is an interesting story related to celebrating Hanuman Ashtami which is as follows – ‘In Treta Yuga, when Lord Shri Ram was fighting with Ravana, Ravana’s brother Ahiravan had taken Lord Shri Ram and Lakshman to the underworld by deceit. When Hanumanji came to know about this, he went to the underworld and killed Ahiravana there and brought Ram-Lakshman to earth. After this, Hanumanji rested for some time in Ujjain, which is considered to be the navel center of the earth. That day was Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Paush month, hence on this date this festival is celebrated as Hanuman Ashtami in Ujjain, Indore and its surrounding areas.
