The day of 22nd November will bring a new chapter in the history of Indian cricket. The process which started from Mumbai’s Gymkhana about 92 years ago, has passed through different parts of the country and reached North-East India for the first time in almost a century. The long journey of Test cricket in India has now reached its 30th milestone. When the players of India and South Africa take the field on Saturday, one more name will be added to the list of Test cricket venues in India – Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. For the first time, a Test match will be played in the only international cricket stadium in North-East India.
Guwahati’s Barsapara Stadium is going to become the 30th venue of Test cricket in India. The first Test match in India was played in 1933 at the Gymkhana ground in Mumbai. Then a test match was played between India and England. However, Test cricket never returned to this ground because in the coming years, Mumbai got Brabourne Stadium and then Wankhede Stadium. The journey that started from Gymkhana ground passed through many cities like Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Kanpur, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh and now reached Guwahati.
Even before the debut of Test cricket in Guwahati, there is a record for the highest number of venues for this format in India. Till date, Test cricket has been played in 29 venues in India (30 including Guwahati). However, many of these venues are now closed and international cricket is not organized there. This also includes the Gymkhana ground. Pakistan is at second place in this list, where Test cricket has been organized in 16 different venues. Whereas England and Australia have only 10 and 11 venues to start Test cricket.

The interesting thing is that Test cricket has been played on a total of 30 grounds in England (10), Australia (11) and New Zealand (9), which is equal to India. If we talk about other countries, test matches have been played in 12 venues of West Indies, 11 of South Africa, 8 of Sri Lanka, 8 of Bangladesh and 3 of Zimbabwe. Test matches have been organized in 4 grounds of UAE, while 2 grounds of Ireland have also become witnesses of long format matches.
