New Delhi: The founder of a Delhi-based company took to social media to discuss financial management in a marriage. He stated that a couple earning over Rs 30 lakh each annually divided expenses like “flatmates”. He opined that the practice was “baffling” to him. Netizens weighed in on the now-viral LinkedIn post.
Ayushmaan Kapoor, founder of The Date Crew, stated that a couple based out of Gurugram used tools like Splitwise or Google Sheets to pay their “share”. Calling it “baffling”, Kapoor went on to compare marriage to starting a company with another person. In the post, he wrote, “When you marry someone, you’re essentially co-founding a company. And that company is your life together.” Further, he stated that there will be chaos if the co-founders have different goals, expenses and priorities.
Married Gurugram couple shares expenses like ‘flatmates’; netizens react
Encouraging the couple to revisit their financial strategy, the man stated, “Marriage isn’t just emotional support. It’s financial alignment too.” He asked couples to plan it like a company strategy, emphasising that it will be the most important company you will ever build.
Netizens jumped in to share their opinions. While some explained the relevance of using tools to share expenses, others touched on the significance of having common financial goals.
One wrote, “We use Splitwise to log our expenses and gain clarity on our monthly spend. It’s about optimising and planning, not keeping score.” Another commented that using Splitwise was just a way to prevent one from burdening the other.
Others stated that such conversations about money should be had before marriage. They also stated that many enter into marriage without giving it a thought, and later realise their approach to money is misaligned.
“It’s not just about who earns how much. It’s about how you think about money,” said one user from LinkedIn.
