Guru Randhawa shuts down Instagram comments after Azul music video backlash

New Delhi: Singer Guru Randhawa has found himself at the centre of criticism after the release of his latest music video, Azul. The track, which dropped earlier this month, has been accused of sexualising schoolgirls and romanticising a questionable teacher-student dynamic.

Following the backlash, the Punjabi singer quietly restricted comments on his Instagram posts. The video opens with Randhawa portraying a photography teacher preparing for a group photo. Actor Anshika Pandey, styled in a school uniform, enters the frame and performs a dance sequence. Randhawa’s character is shown visibly mesmerised.

Guru Randhawan’s track Azul draws backlash

As the song progresses, Anshika reappears in casual clothing, performing bold choreography. This narrative shift, however, has done little to ease the discomfort viewers expressed.

Many critics argue that the portrayal trivialises predatory behaviour. The depiction of a student-teacher attraction has been labelled as deeply problematic, especially when framed in a glossy, glamorous music video. The fact that Anshika is shown as a schoolgirl, regardless of her real-life age, has only heightened public outrage.

Fans react on social media

Social media has since erupted with strong reactions. One user wrote, “Guru Randhawa’s new song Azul has him ogling at girls in school uniforms, and when people started pointing it out on Insta, he restricted comments.” Another added on X, “Media portrayals that trivialise or glamorise the sexualisation of children only worsen this issue by reinforcing harmful behaviours. Rather than normalising such depictions, artists should inspire healthier cultural narratives.”

Several voices online echoed similar sentiments. “Guru Randhawa’s new music video is disgusting. A grown a* man is instantly attracted to a school girl and this is romanticised? Since when did we normalise pedo behaviour,”* one comment read. Another critic stated, “The video shows hypersexualisation of a girl in uniform, implying a school-going teen. The lack of outrage represents a collective loss of morality.”

The singer, who also penned and composed the track alongside Gurjit Gill, has yet to release an official statement on the matter. His decision to limit Instagram interactions, however, has been widely perceived as a strategic step to curb mounting criticism.
