Once Guru Nanak Dev Ji reached a town named Syedpur with his childhood friend and first disciple Bhai Mardana. There lived a poor carpenter, whose name was Bhai Lalo. Brother Lalo was very hardworking, honest and simple in nature. He would work with wood all day long and earn his living from that. He used to eat very simple food. Guru Nanak Dev Ji stayed at his house and had a simple meal.

There lived a rich landlord in Syedpur city, whose name was Malik Bhago. He was very rich, but he used to be dishonest. He used to take away the rights of the poor and forcibly take money from the people. One day he organized a big feast on the occasion of his father’s Shraddha, in which all the rich people and saints of the city were invited. When he came to know about the presence of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the city, he called him also.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji told him that he had already accepted Bhai Lalo’s food. Saying this he rejected his invitation, but on the strong insistence of Malik Bhago, Guru Nanak Dev Ji went to his house with Bhai Lalo. Many dishes were served there. Everyone was thinking that Guru Nanak Dev Ji would praise the dishes prepared at Malik Bhago’s place, but Guru Nanak Dev Ji did something that shocked everyone.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji held Bhai Lalo’s plain bread in one hand and Malik Bhago’s dish in the other hand. After this both were squeezed together. Everyone’s eyes remained wide open at this. Milk came out from Bhai Lalo’s bread and blood dripped from Malik Bhago’s dishes. Then Guru Nanak Dev Ji, while explaining to the people present there, described milk as a symbol of honest earnings. He said that Bhai Lalo has made the bread with hard work and love, hence there is a blessing in it. Malik Bhago’s dishes dripped with blood because he earned his wealth from the blood and sweat of the poor.

He said that a person never remains happy with money earned dishonestly. Hearing this, Malik Bhago realized his mistake. Then he sought forgiveness from Guru Nanak Dev Ji and promised that he would live an honest life.
