Gudi Padwa Puja Rules: According to the Hindu calendar, Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month is the auspicious time when not only nature takes a turn but the new year also begins. In Maharashtra and many parts of the country, it is celebrated with great enthusiasm as Gudi Padwa. The Gudi i.e. Vijay Pataka hoisted in the courtyard of the house on this day is not just a flag, but it is considered a symbol of the victory of positivity over negativity and the golden times to come. Let us know what things should be kept in mind while hoisting the victory flag on the day of Gudi Padwa.
When will Gudi Padwa be celebrated?
According to Drik Panchang, this year the Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month will start on March 19 at 06.52 am and it will end on March 20 at 04.52 am. Therefore, in the year 2026, the festival of Gudi Padwa will be celebrated on 19 March.
Why is the day of Gudi Padwa special?
Gudi Padwa is considered the beginning of the Hindu New Year. It is believed that on this day Lord Brahma created the universe. This day gives the message of new beginning in life, leaving behind old sorrows, moving forward and taking steps towards success. A Gudi placed outside the house symbolizes that happiness, peace and prosperity reside in your house.
Importance of hoisting the victory flag
Gudi or Vijay Pataka is placed near the main door or window of the house. It is considered auspicious to plant it at a height, so that it is visible from a distance and attracts positive energy. The Gudi is placed on a bamboo stick decorated with saree, kalash and neem leaves. This decoration is considered a symbol of happiness and health in life.
Do not plant your idol in this direction even by mistake.
According to religious beliefs and Vastu Shastra, Gudi should never be placed in the south direction. South direction is considered to be the direction of Yama, which indicates negative energy. Placing Gudi in this direction can increase obstacles and problems in the house instead of positivity.
Which is the right direction?
It is always considered most auspicious to place Gudi in the east or north direction. East direction is the direction of Sun God, which is a symbol of energy, light and new beginnings. Whereas the north direction is considered to be associated with wealth and prosperity. Placing Gudi in these directions brings prosperity, success and good fortune in the house.
Correct rules and method of decorating
A long bamboo stick is used to install the Gudi. A yellow or saffron silk cloth with a golden border is tied over it. A garland of neem leaves and flowers is placed over it. A copper or silver pot is kept upside down at the top. The most important thing is that it should not be kept on the ground. Rather tie it firmly at a high place. There should be a feeling of happiness in the mind while hoisting it. This Gudi should be removed respectfully in the evening before sunset.
