GT vs MI IPL 2026: A clash between best and the worst pace attack

New Delhi: Hardik Pandya will return to his old stomping ground, where he scripted history four years ago, as the Gujarat Titans welcome their prodigal son to Ahmedabad as the captain of the Mumbai Indians. Pandya entered IPL folklore after leading GT to the title triumph in their maiden season in the 2022 edition, but finds himself at a crossroads as the MI skipper in IPL 2026.

On one hand, Shubman Gill has led GT to three successive wins after a pair of losses at the start of the season; on the other hand, Hardik’s MI are on a dismal run of four straight losses after opening the season with an impressive win over the three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

While GT have found the winning formula with impressive victories over Delhi Capitals (DC), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and KKR, MI are still searching for it.

IPL 2026 form analysis: Gujarat Titans’ ascent vs Mumbai Indians’ plunge

GT’s resurgence is built on skipper Gill’s superb form and the pace bowling attack. The India ODI and Test skipper has led from the front in the batting department with consecutive fifty-plus scores, while Prasidh Krishna and Kagiso Rabada have been consistently among the wickets.

MI, though, are still waiting for its batting order to click and its bowling department to fire.

Rohit Sharma’s fitness, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma’s impactless start to the season, and Jasprit Bumrah going wicketless in the first five matches are some of the major reasons behind the dismal run of the five-time champions, who have no option but to bounce back to winning ways against the Titans tonight (Monday).

MI vs GT: The Best vs the worst

The fast bowling stats comparison between the two teams tells a telling story. On one hand, GT pace attack has picked up a combined 29 wickets at 24.89; on the other hand, MI fast bowling line-up has bagged just nine wickets at a dismal average of 65.81.

GT (Fast bowling stats before the start of Match 30 of IPL 2026)

Prasidh Krishna – 11 wickets
Kagiso Rabada – 7 wickets
Ashok Sharma – 6 wickets
Mohammed Siraj – 5 wickets

Total wickets – 29, Bowling Average – 24.89

MI (Fast bowling stats before the start of Match 30 of IPL 2026)

Shardul Thakur – 5 wickets
Hardik Pandya – 2 wickets
Trent Boult – 1 wicket
Deepak Chahar – 1 wicket

Total wickets – 9, Bowling Average – 65.81

The pace bowling disparity

Prasidh, GT’s most successful bowler this season, is third in the bowling charts, while MI’s best, Shardul, is not even in the top 20. Such has been MI’s plight that their most successful bowler, Bumrah, who is regarded as one of the most prolific wicket-takers in the history of T20 cricket, is yet to take a wicket. Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar, two excellent new-ball bowlers known to take wickets aplenty in the powerplay, have picked up just two wickets between them.

The contrast in performances reflects the true state and ambitions of the teams ahead of the much-awaited clash in Ahmedabad. MI, the joint-most successful side in the history of IPL, stands on the brink of disaster. GT, meanwhile, aim to enter the playoff spots and consolidate their spot in the top four.
