Last year, when the GST Council met, the government imposed separate tax on popcorn in three categories. But this time the ministry has removed the confusion on popcorn tax and adjusted it to 2 categories. The new rates will be implemented from September 22.

After the last meeting of the GST Council, when the government decided to put the salt popcorn in two categories and the Carimaliz Popcorm in a separate category, there was a lot of stir on social media. Therefore, this time the government has decided to impose 5 percent tax on salt popcorn whether it is open or closed in packets. At the same time, 18 percent GST has been imposed on Carimal Popcorn.

Earlier it seemed so tax

The government had so far taxed in three slabs on popcorn. Since now tax slabs have become two, there is no question of tax in three categories on popcorn. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman divided the salt popcorn into two slabs in the last year’s GST meeting. In which the salt popcorn was sold in the open 5 percent tax on them and those who were sold with the label in the packet were taxed at 12 percent. Apart from this, 18 percent tax was imposed on Carimaliz Popcorn.

Tax free of bread and paratha

The government has made the bread and paratha tax free. At present, there is a tax of 5 percent on bread. While 18 percent tax has to be paid above the paratha. But in the new rates, the government has lifted the tax on these. They have become tax free.
