The GST collection of August 2024 last year was Rs 1.75 lakh crore but according to the recently released government data, the figure was Rs 1.86 lakh crore in August 2025, which is about 6.5% more. However, if we compare the last month i.e. July 2025, then the GST collection in July was ₹ 1.96 lakh crore, which is more than August.
This means that there has been a slight decline in August compared to July. In July, the collection was more due to festivals and other economic activities, while in August it returned to a normal level. Nevertheless, the GST collection of August is better than last year.
GST collection was on record in April
In April this year, the GST collection reached the highest level of its entire history, when the government earned Rs 2.37 lakh crore. Apart from GST in August, total domestic revenue has also increased. In August 2025, the gross domestic revenue was Rs 1.36 lakh crore, which is 6.6 percent more than the previous year. However, there has been a slight decline in import tax, which was reduced from 1.2 percent to Rs 49,354 crore from year to year.
Big change than GST reform?
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a big announcement on Independence Day that the GST reforms will be brought before the public till Diwali. He said that these reforms will give better relief to the common man and will benefit small businesses, especially middle class entrepreneurs. The Prime Minister said that the eight years have been completed to implement the GST and now the time has come to make it better so that the tax system can become even more simple and effective.
States also together in GST reforms
Recently, there have been reports that many opposition ruled states are also in favor of GST reforms. They want the GST rates to be more rational so that both the traders and the general public benefit. Also, they also want to control profiteering so that only some people do not get more benefits.
