Patrick Mahomes is widely regarded as the face of the NFL, a three-time Super Bowl champion whose talent has fueled Kansas City’s ongoing dynasty. Yet, not everyone in football circles is convinced his game is as flawless as his résumé suggests. NFL analyst Greg Cosell recently raised eyebrows by suggesting Mahomes may not be among the league’s best when it comes to reading passing progressions.
Greg Cosell points to flaws in Patrick Mahomes’ game despite historic success
During an appearance on the Ross Tucker Podcast, Cosell revealed a surprising critique of the Chiefs quarterback. “I’ve been told by coaches in the league that (Mahomes) is not among the best progression readers in the league,” Cosell said.
The comment stands out because Mahomes’ career has been defined by dazzling improvisation and clutch performances. Still, Cosell’s point highlights a growing debate in NFL analysis: is Mahomes’ greatness more about his natural talent than his technical mastery of the position?
Cosell also drew comparisons to other quarterbacks, noting that while Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts excels at deep throws like fades and go routes, he struggles with vision in the middle of the field. “There may be no better quarterback in the league throwing fade balls and go routes than Jalen Hurts. But they don’t work the middle of the field because he doesn’t see it very well,” Cosell added.
