Green Pea Farming: As winter approaches, the demand for peas increases significantly in the market. Although peas are a winter crop, they are used throughout the year, that is why frozen peas are also available in the market. Despite this, many people grow peas in their terraces, gardens and balconies. It doesn’t require much effort, you can easily grow peas in containers or raised beds to enjoy fresh green beans.
Growing Peas in Containers
If you want to grow peas in your balcony, terrace or garden, you can choose bushy or vining varieties. For gardening at home, you can sow varieties like Cascadia, Sugar Daddy, Sugar Snap, and Snow/Mangeout peas.
Preparing containers for planting peas
Before sowing pea seeds, fill containers or raised beds with a mixture of compost, vermicompost, garden soil and coco peat. Keep in mind that the containers or beds should be empty about 2 inches from the top so that the water does not flow out while watering. After lightly watering the containers, sow the germinated pea seeds. Maintain moisture in the soil for good growth of pea plants. Or you can skip all this preparation and buy pea plants from the nursery.

Especially when the pods start emerging, loosen the soil in the containers with the help of a trowel. Keep an eye on the plants regularly for insects and diseases, and if you spot any insects, spray them with neem oil.

You can also plant pea varieties that ripen in less time. When the pea pods in the container become of good length and green, pluck them. Keep in mind that the pea plant or vine is delicate. Therefore, handle the plant and vine carefully while plucking pea pods. This way, you can enjoy fresh green peas every day by gardening at home during the winter season.
