Breaking US Immigration Update: Trump suspends green card lottery, citing Brown University and MIT shootings. USCIS Halts Processing, 20 Million Applicants Confused – Is DV Lottery Ending Forever?
Green Card Lottery Suspended by Trump: Once again a big and shocking change has come to light in America’s immigration policy. President Donald Trump has ordered to suspend the Diversity Visa Lottery Program (DV Lottery Program) with immediate effect. The reason for this decision is being said to be the Brown University and MIT shooting case, which has raised serious questions on America’s security system and immigration system. Official information about this decision was given by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem through the social media platform X (earlier Twitter). He clearly said that this order has been issued on the direct instructions of President Trump and now USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) will stop the processing of this program indefinitely.
Why did Trump suddenly suspend the green card lottery?
According to Kristi Noem, Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, accused in the Brown University shooting, came to America in 2017 through the DV Lottery Program and got a green card. Noem wrote in her post that “a person like this should never have been allowed to come to America.” Citing this reason, the Trump administration termed this program as “dangerous” and said that it could threaten the safety of American citizens.

Has this decision been taken before?
This is not the first time that Trump has raised questions on the Diversity Visa Program. Even after an ISIS attack in New York City in 2017, Trump tried to end this program. The accused of that attack also came to America under DV Lottery. Now once again carrying forward the same argument, the program has been suspended.
Who will be affected by the closure of DV Lottery?
The Diversity Visa Program issues up to 50,000 green cards each year to citizens of countries that are underrepresented in the United States. It includes people from Africa, Asia and some European countries. About 2 crore people had applied for the visa lottery for the year 2025. Of these, more than 1.31 lakh people including the winners and their families were selected. Now all these people are confused as to what their future will be.
Is this suspension permanent?
At present, the White House has not made it clear how long this ban will last or whether it will be challenged legally. Immigration experts believe that if this decision continues for a long time, it could prove to be a historic turning point in America’s immigration policy.
What happened in the Brown University shooting?
Two people died and nine were injured in a mass shooting on Saturday. According to police, the accused, Claudio Neves Valente, a Brown University alumnus and Portuguese national, later shot himself and died. Initial investigation has revealed that he carried out this attack alone. The suspension of the Green Card Lottery is not just an immigration decision, but a big signal related to America’s security, politics and global migration policy. Now the whole world is eyeing whether DV Lottery will end forever or it is just a temporary stop.
