Harpratik, a 25-year-old communication professional from Gurugram, says that I am completely supportive of this decision. He said, frankly speaking, it should have been implemented much earlier. When people see the government recognizing period pain and giving them time off, it sends the message that it’s not something to be taken lightly or shamefully.” Some people say the move is welcome for women, but many are hesitant. Many women fear that taking time off could lead to them being seen as weak or less hard-working. Additionally, some companies are concerned that the extra 12 days off could pose a risk to an employee.

In which states is period leave available?
A committee was formed to review the rules for menstrual leave. The committee had suggested that women should get 6 days leave every month. But the government has decided to increase it to 12 days of annual leave. The Labor Minister said that this holiday will be applicable in both government and private sectors. Menstrual leave in India was first introduced in Bihar in 1992. Bihar is the first state in the country which gave two days leave every month to women. Apart from this, states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala also give menstrual leave to women with certain rules.
But just giving leave is not enough. Real change will happen when offices and male employees understand this and show sympathy towards women. There should be such an environment in the office in which no woman feels the need to apologize for her period.
