govardhan puja
Govardhan Puja 2025: Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakoot Utsav, is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Pratipada of Kartik month. This festival is not just a religious tradition but also gives a beautiful message of devotion, gratitude and love for nature. On this day we remember that Lord Shri Krishna had raised Govardhan Mountain to protect the people of Braj. This incident teaches that true worship is not hidden only in mantras or yagyas, but in respecting mother cow, land, trees, plants and food. Govardhan Puja teaches us humility, respect and protection of nature.
Indra Dev’s anger and Govardhan Puja
According to the story, when Lord Shri Krishna told the people of Braj that they should worship Govardhan Mountain instead of Indra, because it provides rain, food and resources necessary for life, then the people of Braj stopped Indra Yagya and started worshiping Govardhan Mountain. Seeing this Indra Dev became very angry. His ego was hurt because he thought that everyone would worship him. Indra Dev’s anger was so strong that he caused heavy rain on Braj.
The rain became so intense that farms, houses and animals were in danger. The lives of the people of Braj were in danger and the situation became difficult for them. From this incident it is clear that Lord Krishna showed the importance of true devotion and reverence. Worship does not only mean performing sacrifices for the gods, but also means respect for nature and life.
Leela of Lord Krishna
When the people of Braj were threatened by the angry rains of Indra Dev, Lord Shri Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain on his pinky finger (smallest finger). He protected the people of Braj and their animals by keeping this mountain in his hands for seven days. Through this wonderful leela, God gave the message that the basis of true devotion and reverence is not ego, but respect for nature, creatures and life. Indra Dev accepted his mistake and apologized to Lord Krishna. This incident also teaches us that humility and service have the greatest importance in devotion.
