Story of Govardhan Puja

According to Shrimad Bhagwat, when Lord Krishna was a child, the people of Gokul used to worship Lord Indra with the wish of good rain. Knowing this, Shri Krishna told everyone that ‘It is Indra’s job to make rain. Govardhan Mountain provides sustenance to our cows, hence we should worship it.
Then everyone obeyed Shri Krishna and worshiped Govardhan Mountain. Seeing this, Devraj Indra became angry and started raining heavily on Gokul. To save everyone, Shri Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain on his finger, due to which all the villagers became safe.
– When Shri Krishna held Govardhan Mountain on his finger for 7 days, seeing this, Indra understood that Shri Krishna was not an ordinary human being but an incarnation of Lord Vishnu himself. Then Devraj Indra came and asked for forgiveness from Shri Krishna. That’s why this tradition of Govardhan Puja started which continues even today.
