New Delhi: In a major development in the Gorakhpur NEET murder, all policemen posted at the Jungle Dhushar outpost have been suspended following the crime. The outpost in-charge, along with the entire staff, has been relieved of duty. A departmental inquiry has also been initiated against all suspended personnel. The action was taken by SSP Rajkaran Nayyar.
A 19-year-old student preparing for the NEET exam, identified as Dileep Gupta from Mahuachafi Tola village under Pipraich police station limits, was killed late on the night of September 16. He was allegedly attacked by cattle smugglers after he and other villagers tried to chase them.
According to police, cattle smugglers had entered the village around 3 am in two vehicles. When locals gave chase, one of the smugglers’ vehicles got stuck in mud. Dileep was caught by the smugglers, taken away in the other vehicle, and later thrown out on the road. He suffered severe head injuries and died.
Violent protests
The killing sparked massive anger in the area. Villagers set one of the smugglers’ vehicles on fire and blocked the Gorakhpur-Pipraich road for several hours. When police reached the spot to control the situation, some villagers pelted stones at them. Police from nearby stations and a unit of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) were called in to bring the situation under control.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Raj Karan Nayyar said a case has been registered and five teams have been formed to catch the accused. “Locals are saying firing also took place, but so far there is no proof of injuries from bullets,” he told reporters.
Opposition slams Yogi govt
The incident quickly turned political, with the Opposition attacking the Uttar Pradesh government. Congress leader Shahnawaz Alam said the case shows how law and order has worsened in the State. “Even in the Chief Minister’s own district, criminals roam freely without fear. Earlier, this area was known for good policing, but today the situation has become the worst across the State,” he said.
