Gorakhpur International Cricket Stadium: Indian Oil will give ₹60 crore for the 30 thousand capacity international cricket stadium to be built in Gorakhpur. The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The project is targeted to be completed by December 2027.
A new line is going to be drawn on the sports map of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. The state government has taken a big step regarding the proposed international cricket stadium in Gorakhpur. An MoU was signed between the Uttar Pradesh government and Indian Oil Corporation Limited on Thursday in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Under this agreement, Indian Oil will provide support of ₹60 crore through CSR.
Not just sports infrastructure, but a bridge of talents
In the MOU program, the Chief Minister said that this stadium will not be just a brick and stone structure, but will become a powerful medium to take the emerging talents of Purvanchal to the national and international stage. According to him, the international level sports complex will also give new energy to sports tourism, investment and local economy in the area.
The Chief Minister described Public-Private Partnership (PPP model) as an effective medium for the overall development of the state and appreciated the cooperation of Indian Oil. He also mentioned that an international cricket stadium is also under construction in Varanasi, which is targeted to be completed by June 2026. Necessary provisions have been made in the budget for the Gorakhpur project.

Capacity of 30,000 spectators, construction as per international standards
The proposed Gorakhpur International Cricket Stadium will have a seating capacity of approximately 30,000 spectators. It will be developed completely as per international standards.
The key features of the project will be:
- State-of-the-art pitch and outfield
- Dedicated Practice Area
- high-mast floodlights
- Modern dressing rooms and recovery facilities for players
- State-of-the-Art Media Center
- Advanced Sports Infrastructure
The government has set a target to complete this project by December 2027. According to experts, if the construction is completed within the stipulated time frame, the way will be opened for hosting major international competitions for the first time in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
From ‘Khelo India’ to ‘Fit India’ – State Strategy
Referring to the campaigns like ‘Khelo India’ and ‘Fit India Movement’ launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister said that sports culture in the country has got a new direction.
The state government has announced in this year’s budget to establish sports colleges in every division. Also, Major Dhyan Chand Sports University under construction in Meerut is progressing rapidly. This university is moving towards becoming a big center in the field of sports education and training.
Indian Oil expressed pride
Indian Oil Chairman Arvinder Sawhney described the MoU as a ‘matter of pride’ for the group. He assured that the company will continue to provide all possible support in the all-round development of Uttar Pradesh in future also.
Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Sports and Youth Welfare Girish Chandra Yadav was also present in the program. He said that under the leadership of the Chief Minister, Uttar Pradesh is moving at a fast pace towards becoming a ‘sports power’ and this proposed stadium of Gorakhpur is a historic milestone in that journey.
What will change for Purvanchal?
Sports experts believe that by building an international stadium:
- Local players will get high level facilities
- National selectors and organizers will keep an eye on Purvanchal
- Hotels, transportation and small businesses will benefit directly
- Sports based employment opportunities will be created
Gorakhpur, which till now has been known for its religious and educational identity, can also create its own identity on the sports tourism map in the coming years. If the project is completed on schedule, after December 2027 this stadium can write a new sports story of Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
