Gopashtami 2025 Date and time: The festival of Gopashtami is celebrated every year on the Ashtami date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. This time Gopashtami is tomorrow i.e. on 30th October. Gopashtami is celebrated with great pomp in Mathura, Vrindavan and Braj. Lord Krishna and cows are worshiped on this auspicious occasion. Mother cow is especially worshiped in cowsheds on Gopashtami. There is a religious belief that worshiping cows on Gopashtami brings happiness and prosperity in the house and improves the financial condition.

Why is Gopashtami celebrated? (Why is Gopashtami celebrated)
According to mythological belief, Gopashtami is celebrated because on this day Lord Krishna started grazing cows for the first time. This day also symbolizes respect for cows and bulls. This day is celebrated as the festival of ‘Go’ (cow) and ‘Gopal’ (Krishna). On Gopashtami, people do special worship and decorate cows, because cow is considered sacred in Hindu religion.
What should be done on Gopashtami?
On Gopashtami, serve the cows, vaccinate them, feed them green fodder and jaggery and circumambulate them. On this day, worship Lord Krishna, perform his aarti and donate to the cowherds. On the day of Gopashtami, cleaning the cowshed and applying cow’s soil on the forehead is also considered auspicious.
How to worship Gopashtami? (Gopashtami puja method)
- Become pure by taking bath before sunrise and wear clean clothes.
- Bathe the cow, apply sandalwood on its horns, garland it around the neck and cover it with new clothes or thread (Kalava).
- Feed green fodder, jaggery, seasonal fruits and other special food to the cow.
- After this, perform Aarti of the cow by lighting incense sticks.
- Do three rounds of the cow and then take blessings.
- Apply some soil from the cow’s place on your forehead.
- After the puja, distribute some sweet food or prasad.
- If cow is not available, you can worship a cow-calf idol made of silver or clay.
- Cow is worshiped along with Lord Krishna on Gopashtami. After the puja, also perform aarti of Lord Krishna.

Jaggery:- Feeding jaggery to a cow is considered very auspicious and is good for financial gain.
Bread:- Feeding the first roti to a cow is considered virtuous, which is considered equivalent to yagya and charity.
Green fodder and green spinach:- By feeding this to the cow, planet Mercury gets strengthened and lack of money goes away.
Flour Peda:- Moon and Venus are strengthened by feeding flour flour on this day.
Which mantra should be chanted while feeding bread to a cow?
While feeding roti to the cow on Gopashtami, one should chant the mantra “Mother Cow” or “Om Dhenurupayai Namah”. Apart from this, while feeding bread to the cow, you should chant “Tvam Mata Sarvadevanam Tvam Cha Yagyasya Karanam. You can also chant mantra. Chanting these mantras brings blessings and auspicious results from 33 crore Gods and Goddesses.
