Google Maps now works on Garmin watches with real-time turn alerts

New Delhi: Garmin smartwatch users can now keep their phones in their pockets while walking, running or cycling. On July 10, Garmin announced that its watches will now support turn-by-turn directions from Google Maps, bringing navigation directly to the wrist.

The new feature is available for Android users through the Connect IQ Store and works with compatible Garmin smartwatches such as the Venu, Forerunner, vívoactive and fenix series. The app sends notifications to the watch after a user enters a destination on Google Maps via their phone.

Turn-by-turn guidance

This update makes it easier for people who prefer not to constantly look at their phones during outdoor activities. The app provides clear directions using gentle vibrations and notifications for each upcoming turn. Pedestrians navigating busy roads can see the next three turns by simply tapping into the app on their smartwatch.

“Whether exploring a new city, mapping out a run or casually cycling with friends, the Google Maps app in the Connect IQ store will keep users going in the right direction,” said Susan Lyman, Garmin’s Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing.

Still tracking fitness

The integration doesn’t affect any existing tracking features. Users can continue recording workouts, tracking distance, heart rate and other metrics on their Garmin device while using Google Maps navigation. Once an activity ends, the data can be synced via Garmin Connect to Android fitness apps using Health Connect.

This means you won’t have to pick between fitness stats and directions. You get both.

Available now, free to download

The Google Maps app is now available to download for free from the Connect IQ Store. The store also offers thousands of other apps, watch faces, widgets and more, letting users personalise their devices. It can be accessed through Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Garmin’s move adds to the growing list of smartwatches offering navigation features directly on the wrist. But for those who use Garmin regularly for fitness, the addition of Google Maps might make their outdoor routines even more seamless.
