Good news on employment front, unemployment reduced in August, women showed strength

Relief news has come out about unemployment in the country, according to which the unemployment rate for people aged 15 and above has come down to 5.1% in August 2025, which shows the decline for the second consecutive month. This information has come out from the Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MOSPI).

Earlier in July, this rate was 5.2% while it remained at 5.6% level in both May and June. At the same time, in April 2025, the unemployment rate was 5.1%, and now he has returned to the same level again in August.

Unemployment decreased in men

In August, the unemployment rate of men has come down to 5%, which is the lowest in the last five months. This rate was 5.2% in April, 5.6% in May and June and 5.3% in July. A major reason for this reform is a decline in unemployment of men in urban areas. While it was 6.6% in July, it decreased to 5.9% in August.

Better situation in rural areas

Things have improved in rural areas as well. The unemployment rate of rural men decreased to 4.5% in August, which is lower than the last four months. Overall, the rural unemployment rate has come down from 5.1% of May to 4.3% in August. This is the third consecutive month when the unemployment rate in rural areas has decreased, which is a positive sign.

Improvement in women’s participation

Not only unemployment rate, women’s labor population ratio (WPR) has also improved for the second consecutive month. It was 30.2% in June 2025, which increased to 32% in August. Not only this, the WPR of the entire country has also increased from 51.2% to 52.2%.

Women’s labor force participation rate also gains

Labor force participation rate (LFPR) is also increasing in women. It was 32% in June, which increased to 33.7% in August. LFPR of rural women stood at 37.4% in August as against 35.2% in June. It has also increased from 25.2% to 26.1% in urban areas.
