To get this city, Ravana did such deeds, which not only made him a great warrior, but ultimately also became the reason for its destruction. Let us know about the mythological story of Golden Lanka.
How was Golden Lanka created?
According to Ramayana, Lanka was built by Vishwakarma, who is said to be the architect of the gods. Initially this city was built for Lord Shiva. It is said that Vishwakarma had decorated this city with pure gold. The shine of gold in the palaces, gates, roads and palaces was shining like the sun.
Kuber was the first lord of Lanka
The first king of Lanka was Kuber, who is also considered the god of wealth. Kuber made Lanka his capital and operated the treasury of the gods from here. But Kuber’s step brother Ravana, who was the son of sage Pulastya, was filled with jealousy and greed after seeing this splendor.
Ravana’s penance and Brahma’s boon
In his desire to get Lanka, Ravana performed severe penance. To please Lord Brahma, he practiced hard for years and did not shy away from even cutting off his head and offering it as a sacrifice. Lord Brahma was pleased with his penance and asked him to ask for a boon. Ravana asked for immortality from Gods, Demons and Yakshas in the boon, but considering humans as insignificant, he did not include them in the boon. This mistake later became the cause of his destruction.
Kuber was expelled from Lanka
After receiving the boon, Ravana used his power to drive Kuber out of Lanka and himself became the king of Lanka. He also snatched away Kubera’s Pushpak Viman, the amazing grandeur of golden Lanka, the description of Lanka in Ramayana is very beautiful. It is said that the palaces of Lanka were studded with gold and gems, the roads were paved with gold,
The buildings were studded with diamonds, pearls and rubies. There were beautiful places in the city like water pond, garden and Ashok Vatika. When Hanuman ji entered Lanka, he admitted to getting distracted for a moment after seeing its prosperity, but immediately controlled himself by remembering Lord Ram.
How did Lanka fall?
Along with the grandeur of Lanka, Ravana’s arrogance and lawlessness also increased. Kidnapping Mother Sita proved to be his biggest mistake. Lord Rama attacked Lanka with the monkey army and finally ended unrighteousness by killing Ravana. It is said that after the war, the splendor of Golden Lanka was destroyed and it is believed to be located at the same place in today’s Lanka (Sri Lanka), although the Golden City now survives only in texts and stories.
