‘Golden Hour’ rescue: Quick-thinking mother saves son from paralysis after gym collapse in Nagpur

New Delhi: A startling incident has come to light from Nagpur. It unfolded on April 10.

After his repeated deadlift attempts at a city gym, Om Bhoyar, a 23-year-old man, posted a message with a video. The post said: “Lost many times, but giving up is not an option. I will keep trying, until I win.”

The youth came back home from the gym session and then a shocking thing happened: he collapsed and lost consciousness.

What did his mother do

Aarti Bhoyar, his mother who is a nurse by profession, quickly understood that her son was going through a paralytic attack. She realised that the attack was possibly because of a brain haemorrhage, and that the critical ‘Golden Hour’ to check the impact of the damage was fast slipping away.

Om Bhoyar used to go to gym and spent several hours exercising there. After he collapsed at home, the first 3-4 hours — also known as the ‘Golden Hour’ — were important. Without losing any time, Aarti Bhoyar took him to the hospital.

What did the doctors find

A blood clot was detected in Om’s brain after he underwent diagnostic tests. The clot was removed with the help of a mechanical thrombectomy procedure. The operation went a long way in restoring smooth blood flow to his brain. Om recovered with the passage of time as the blood circulation improved.

It was because of her mother’s quick thinking and presence of mind that Om Bhoyar could be revived. On April 21, he was discharged from the hospital.

Om Bhoyar’s case is a wake-up call for all those gym enthusiasts who exercise without proper supervision and go overboard to shape up. A hemorrhagic stroke can hamper communication between the brain and affect body parts. Om’s mother knew this, as she is a nurse. It was because of her timely intervention that the impact was reduced. And through tests, mechanical thrombectomy procedure and medication, her son got a new lease of life.
