Period-delaying pills side effects: Recently, a doctor has told about a heartbreaking incident, which is a big warning for all of us. Vascular surgeon Dr. Vivekananda told how an 18 -year -old girl died just because she had taken medicine to stop her periods for worship.
It can be fatal to ignore small negligence and doctor’s advice.
What is the whole matter?
Dr. Vivekananda shared this sad story in a podcast. He told that an 18 -year -old engineering student came to her clinic with her friends. There was very severe pain and swelling in her legs and thighs. When he was asked when it started, he told:
“There was worship at home, so I ate some hormonal pills to stop periods.”
He took these pills for only 3 days. On investigation, it was found that he had ‘Deep Vein thrombosis’. This means that a large clot of blood had settled in the vein of his foot, which had almost reached his navel.
Ignoring doctor’s advice
Seeing the seriousness of the girl’s condition, Dr. Vivekananda immediately advised her to be hospitalized. He spoke to the girl’s father over the phone and told him about the seriousness of the situation.
But, the girl’s father said, “Doctor, her mother is saying that she will come tomorrow morning and then we will meet you.”
Despite repeated emphasis of the doctor, the family decided to delay the treatment.
And then it was too late
The doctor told with a heavy heart, “I got a call from the emergency at around 2 pm the same night. I was told that a girl has been brought to the emergency and she is not breathing.”
She was the same 18 -year -old girl. By the time he was brought to the hospital, it was too late. That clot of blood had moved away from his place to his lungs, which stopped his breath and died.
The doctor regretted, “I felt very bad. I thought I wish I had forcibly admitted him with a collar. I should have done this.”
What is deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?
Deep Wayne thrombosis (DVT) is a severe medical condition in which the deep veins of the body, usually in the feet, form a blood clot. Hormonal pills (such as contraceptive or period preventing drugs) are a major risk factor.
The danger occurs when this clot breaks and reaches the lungs with blood flow. This is called Pulmonary Embolism, which can cause sudden death.
- Do not take medicine without asking a doctor: Hormonal pills that prevent or extend the period should be taken very thoughtfully and only on the advice of a doctor. They are not safe for everyone.
- Identify symptoms: If you see symptoms like abnormal pain, swelling, or red skin color, do not ignore it. This can be DVT.
- Take the advice of the doctor seriously: If a doctor is asking you to be hospitalized immediately, it means that the situation is serious. Delay in such a situation can be fatal.
This sad incident reminds us that no decision should be taken carelessly in health related matters. The price of a small mistake can be someone’s life.
