Hyderabad: The five-year term of the elected body of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has ended on February 10, Tuesday.
The civic body will be administered by a special officer of secretary rank and state govt is expected to appoint an officer soon. The special officer will supervise the GHMC, including the governance of 300 wards across the jurisdiction. Statutory provisions mandate the administrative oversight of the body, once the term of the elected body expires and elections are conducted.
Speaking about the administrative oversight, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan said that he will continue to manage the day-to-day functions of the GHMC. “I will continue to be commissioner and will manage daily operations, while the special officer will oversee the corporation.”
The last GHMC elections were held in 2020 and the next election will be held soon.
GHMC expansion:
Meanwhile, with the merger of 27 new urban local bodies into the GHMC, the number of wards have increased from 150 to 300 in December 2025.
The GHMC is now the largest municipal corporation in the country, in terms of area and population, covering 2,500 sq km. However, it is likely that the GHMC will be trifurcated into three corporations – Hyderabad, Malkajgiri, Cyberabad Corporations. Hyderabad Corporation will likely contain 150 wards.
