Genoa has announced the departure of head coach Alberto Gilardino, with Patrick Vieira expected to take over. Gilardino, a 2006 World Cup winner with Italy, leaves the team just one point above the relegation zone, having earned 10 points from 12 matches this season.
The club expressed gratitude for his contributions and wished him well in his future endeavours.
Gilardino, who played as a striker for teams like Genoa, Parma, AC Milan, and Fiorentina, took charge of Genoa in 2022. He led them to promotion to Serie A and secured an 11th-place finish in the 2023-24 season. His final match saw Genoa draw 1-1 against Cesc Fabregas’ Como before the international break.
Reports suggest that Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira is set to replace Gilardino. Vieira has been without a managerial role since leaving Strasbourg by mutual consent in July. His illustrious playing career includes winning the World Cup and Euros with France and securing titles with clubs like AC Milan, Arsenal, Inter Milan, and Manchester City.
If appointed as Genoa’s manager, Vieira would become the first Frenchman to manage in at least three of Europe’s top five leagues this century. He would also reunite with Mario Balotelli, whom he managed at Genoa during the 2018-19 season.
Genoa’s recent performance included being knocked out of the Coppa Italia in September after losing on penalties to Sampdoria in the second round. Their next challenge is against Cagliari at Stadio Luigi Ferraris this Sunday.
Vieira’s managerial career began after retiring from playing in 2011. He has managed New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, and Strasbourg. His potential appointment at Genoa marks another chapter in his coaching journey across major European leagues.
The club’s decision to part ways with Gilardino comes amid struggles on the field this season. Despite his efforts to stabilise the team after promotion last year, results have not met expectations.
