Today’s Gen Z does not consider job as just a means of earning, but considers it an opportunity to learn and progress. Whereas earlier people used to run after higher salary, now the youth are seeing how much they will get to learn while working and how fast their career can progress.
According to the Unstop Talent 2026 report, most Gen G professionals are willing to work even at a lower salary if they get a good learning environment, growth and work-life balance. This is the reason why now more than 60% of the youth give priority to skill development while choosing a job, whereas salary has been left far behind.
Growing gap between companies and Gen G
The interesting thing is that companies have not yet fully understood this change. Only about one-third, or 36 percent, of HR leaders consider themselves prepared to properly hire and manage Gen G. This clearly means that the difference in thinking between companies and the new generation is increasing.
This is the reason why many youth leave their jobs early. Statistics show that more than half of early career employees leave their jobs simply because they do not get growth opportunities there. It is clear from this that talent cannot be stopped just by paying good salaries.
Increasing demand for transparency and career path
Gen Z not only wants to learn, they also want clean and transparent systems. If companies do not provide clear information regarding salary or career growth, then many candidates leave the recruitment process midway. Today’s youth want to know how they will progress in the company, when they will get promotion and what will be the benefit of their hard work. If all this is not clear, their trust is quickly broken.
The changing role of internship
Now internship is no longer just a formality, but has become the first step in one’s career. Most companies offer internships, but very few are able to convert interns into full-time jobs. On the other hand, students want that during internship they should get real work, guidance and a clear path to further employment. If this does not happen, the attractiveness of the internship reduces.
The way of finding a job also changed
Earlier students used to depend only on college placement, but now the picture has changed. Almost all the students are also looking for off-campus opportunities so that they can get better jobs. However, inequality is visible here too. Students from colleges where more companies come, have more chances of getting a job, whereas students from smaller colleges have to struggle more.
What are the dream companies?
Tech companies are still the most attractive for the new generation. Apart from this, big companies of banking, consulting and FMCG sector are also attracting the youth. In India too, big companies and corporate groups remain a dream destination for the youth, especially those companies which offer good management roles and growth opportunities.
After all, what will companies have to change?
The gist of the whole story is that Gen Ji not only needs a job but also a platform where she can learn, grow and strengthen her career. If companies do not understand this change, it will be difficult for them to attract good talent and retain them for the long term. Now the time has come that companies should not only pay attention to salary but also pay equal attention to learning, transparency and growth because that is the real salary for today’s generation.
