Gautam Adani planning battery energy storage system; the biggest in the country

Kolkata: The significance of the battery energy storage system, or BESS in short, can’t be overestimated in the modern world that is focusing on renewable energy. Gautam Adani who has major plans in the renewable energy sector is drawing up plans to set up the largest battery energy storage system in the country. It is being set up in Khyada in the western parts of the country and it will also be one of the largest such projects which are based in a single location, reports said.

BESS helps in storing excess power when the demand is relatively lower. It also balances energy supply and pressure on a grid and decreases dependency on fossil fuels. It also helps in more efficient cost management.

Media reports indicate the installation could be completed by the end of this financial year. The Adani group is setting up a large complex to generate renewable energy. The idea is to ramp up its storage capacity to 50 GWh within five years, indicated the report. The BESS project will be an important part of this blueprint. It was said that the Adanis are holding talks with a few global firms for technological support for the project.

Adani Green Energy Limited is the vehicle for Adani to venture into the renewable energy sector. It has a total operational renewable energy portfolio of 14,242.9 MW. The company has an asset base of $2 billion, and PPAs (power purchase agreement) for 25 years.

The battery energy storage systems are becoming more and more important as grids struggle to balancing large influx of solar and wind power generation. According to various estimates, the total power generation capacity can reach 800 MW this year. With the target to reach 500 GW (gigawatts) by the end of the decade, the country will need a lot of battery storage projects for renewable power.
