Adani Power Deal
Gautam Adani’s company Adani Power and Bhutan -based government company Druk Green Power Corporation Limited have taken a big step together. Both have signed a shareholder agreement for the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project in Bhutan. Also, initial consensus has been reached on the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). It will cost Rs 6,000 crore.
The convention agreement has also been signed for this project with the Royal Government of Bhutan. All these agreements took place in the presence of Bhutan’s PM Dasho Shering Tobge and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani. This deal clears the way to start Adani Power and DGPC to start the Wangchhu hydroelectric project on the Boot model.

Crores of rupees will be spent
In this project, there will be an investment of about 60 billion rupees for renewable energy plant and related infrastructure. The detailed project report has been prepared and the construction is expected to start in the first half of 2026. There is a target to complete it in 5 years. Adani Power CEO SB Khyalia said that Bhutan is a global leader in Sustainable Development. We are excited to participate in developing the natural resources of Bhutan through this renewable energy project. The Wangchhu project will fulfill the demand for electricity in the winter of Bhutan, when hydropower production is low. It will export power to India in summer.

DGPC managing director Dasho Chhewang Rinjin said that Bhutan and India have been working together in Hydropower since 1960. This collaboration has been beneficial for both countries. Bhutan wants to develop an additional capacity of 15,000 MW hydropower and 5,000 MW solar power by 2040. With the technical and financial strength of Adani Group, the project will be faster and set benchmark for future projects. The project is part of the MOU between Adani Group and DGPC in May 2025, with a plan of 5,000 MW hydropower development in Bhutan. Both are now engaged in discussion for the next projects.
