Gau palan in Tihar: Launches gaushala to heal and reform prisoners, Sood calls it ‘cow therapy’

New Delhi: Tihar Jail has introduced a new and unique addition, a gaushala (cowshed) inside the complex. It was inaugurated on Wednesday by Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena and Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood.

The gaushala currently has 10 cows, some were bought and some were donated. It can accommodate 10 more in the future. The Delhi government recently approved this move. Jail officials said that inmates, especially those who are from rural backgrounds, may be involved in feeding and taking care of the cows.

Calling it a form of “cow therapy,” Sood said the initiative could give inmates a sense of comfort. He said this approach may help reduce feelings of isolation among prisoners. Sood also proposed setting up a more advanced gaushala inside Tihar with proper government support and a strong system for cattle care.

He pointed out that from January 1 to 19, Delhi Police received 25,000 complaints about stray and abandoned cattle. Existing gaushalas in the region can house 19,800 animals, but more than 21,800 cattle are currently being kept, showing the need for extra facilities.

Other initiatives launched

Digitisation of Tihar Baking School – Tihar’s bakery products can now be purchased online through ONDC and My Store. This will allow people to order these products directly from their homes. Sood added that he would request the chief minister to allow the use of Tihar Bakery items in all Delhi government offices. He said this will increase the jail’s revenue and motivate inmates.

Inventory Management System – A new digital system has been launched to keep track of essential items like food and medicines. It helps monitor procurement, sends alerts when stocks are low, and ensures transparency and better governance. Sood said these steps may look small, but they represent a vision for better reform and rehabilitation inside Tihar Jail.
