The 8 incarnations of Ganesha are described in the Mudgal Purana. The 8 incarnations of Lord Ganesha are:- Vakratund, Ekadanta, Mahodar, Gajanan, Lambodar, Vikat, Vighnaraja and Smoke Varna. Ganesh ji had these incarnations to destroy various demerits of man like pride, fascination, greed, Matsar (burning with the happiness of others) etc.
1. Vakratund avatar
It is considered to be the first incarnation of Ganesha. Wearing this avatar, Ganesha ended the atrocities of a demon named Matsarasura. This demon used to burn with the happiness of others and tortured people.
2. Ekadant Avatar
This is the second incarnation of Lord Ganesha. Ganapati ji had assumed this avatar to kill a demon named Madasura. This demon was proud and intoxicated etc., who used to torture the gods.
3. Mahodar Avatar
Lord Ganesha assumed this avatar to end the atrocities of a demon named Mohasur. Troubled by the atrocities of the Mohsur demon, the deities called Ganesha, then Ganesh ji took an incarnation.
4. Gajanan avatar
Lord Ganesha took this avatar to kill the demon named Lobhasura. Lobhasura was born from the greed of Kubera Dev, which was a symbol of greed. Ganpati Bappa killed this demon by taking Gajanan avatar.
5. Lumbodar Avatar
Ganesh ji wore this avatar to kill a demon named Krodhasura. The Krodhasura demon took over the universe by doing penance of the Sun God, after which Ganesha took this avatar.
6. Greater avatar
Lord Ganesha was holding the formidable avatar to slay a demon named Kamasura. The Kamasura demon was born to a demon named Jalandhar. In a terrible avatar, Lord Ganesha killed Kamasura, who was enthroned on peacock.
7. Vighnraj avatar
Lord Ganesha took Vighnaraja avatar to kill a demon named Mamasura. This demon originated from the laughter of Mata Parvati. In Vighnaraja avatar, he served as the king of obstacles.
8. Smoke avatar
