There are many mythological stories and religious beliefs behind celebrating this festival. The most prevalent and important story of these is related to the birth of Lord Ganesha.
Story of birth of Lord Ganesha
According to Hindu mythology, once Goddess Parvati had to bathe and appoint someone as gatekeepers so that no one could come in. He built a child with his yoga power and gave him life. This child was none other than Ganesha himself. Goddess Parvati ordered the child that as long as she is taking a bath, no one should be allowed to come in. The boy Ganesh was guarding his mother’s order and guarding the gate. At the same time Lord Shiva came there and started trying to go inside. Ganesh prevented him from going inside. Lord Shiva got angry seeing that a child was stopping them. When Ganesh told Shiva about his mother’s order, Shiva considered it an insult to his reputation.
As the conversation and controversy grew, Lord Shiva got angry and separated Ganesha from his trident from the torso. When Goddess Parvati came to know about this, she was very sad and threatened to destroy the universe. There was havoc all around. The gods and sages tried to calm Goddess Parvati. Then Lord Shiva told his ganas to go towards the north and bring the head of whatever the first creature is found. Ganas found an elephant, whose head they brought. Lord Shiva connected that elephant’s head to Ganesha’s torso and gave him a new life. Shiva blessed him that he would be worshiped before the beginning of any auspicious work. On the occasion of this incident, the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated every year.
