Sarfaraz Khan: Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka after suffering a right toe stress reaction during the India A tour last month.
The BCCI confirmed he is recovering at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, but is not fit for the series opener.
Sarfaraz Khan Gets the Nod
The selectors have named Sarfaraz Khan as Sudharsan’s replacement, marking the batter’s first Test recall since 2024. Sarfaraz has played six Tests for India, scoring 371 runs at an average of 37.1, including one century and three half-centuries. He will join the squad in Colombo before the team moves to Galle for the first Test.
A Fresh Test for Gambhir’s Think Tank
Sarfaraz’s inclusion places head coach Gautam Gambhir and the selection panel in a familiar bind. He was part of the squad for the 2024-25 Australia tour but did not get a game, and was subsequently left out for the England tour last year. His return now raises the question of whether he finally gets a place in the playing XI or once again sits out as cover.
Middle-Order Balance in Focus
With Shubman Gill leading the side and KL Rahul as vice-captain, the middle order already features established names alongside Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel as wicketkeeping options. Sarfaraz’s strength against both pace and spin makes him a viable pick, but slotting him in means a call on the existing batting order.
What’s at Stake in Galle
Sarfaraz Khan: India currently sit fifth in the Championship standings after four wins and four losses in nine games. A strong result against sixth-placed Sri Lanka, starting August 15 in Galle and continuing in Colombo from August 23, is important for India’s qualification hopes, making the composition of the XI a closely watched call.
