June 15, 2001, was the day Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel’s film, Gadar, released in theatres. People thronged cinema halls to watch Tara and Sakina’s love story on the big screen. 25 years later, the film is still etched in everyone’s memories. As clocked 25 years today, Ameesha opened up about the secret behind the longevity of her partition drama. The Bollywood actress mentioned a few things that worked in favour of her and Sunny’s movie. Speaking to a publication, Ameesha also revealed that she was initially unsure about being cast opposite Sunny.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, said, “Gadar worked without gimmicks, without item songs, without over-s*xualisation, without computer graphics.” She further mentioned Sunny’s Tara Singh practically wore one outfit through most of the second half. As for her character, the actress added, “Sakina was covered from head to toe.”

When the actress was asked what worked for Gadar, she said that the numbers and footfalls speak for themselves. Ameesha recalled that there was no concept of social media when her film was made, and work spoke for itself. That said, the actress mentioned how a new generation has discovered her 2001 film, watched it and fallen in love with Tara and Sakina.
In the same conversation, Ameesha admitted she was unsure about being cast opposite Sunny in Gadar. She felt that the actor paired opposite her was senior to her romantically. However, once the makers explained the story, she understood the contrast between Tara’s ruggedness and Sakina’s refinement.

Moving on, the Bollywood actress recalled working with her co-star Sunny on the Anil Sharma directorial. The 51-year-old actress shared that her co-star was extremely supportive and patient. There were times when Deol would patiently explain things to the actress. She added that the actor never lost his temper and patience. “He understood that I was a newcomer and that Sakina was not an easy role.”
Meanwhile, after the massive success of the first part, was made. Helmed by Anil Sharma, the film marked Sunny and Ameesha’s return as Tara and Sakina. They were joined by Utkarsh Sharma and Simrat Kaur Randhawa, who played the roles of Charanjeet and Muskaan.
