New Delhi: Skipper Shubman Gill produced one of the best knocks of his career as he smashed an unbeaten 223 to help India chase down a mammoth target of 406 runs and thrash by 8 wickets in the 2nd ODI at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday, September 30.
It was absolute domination from India with the bat as the hosts pulled off their highest-ever run chase in ODI history on a flat track that had little on offer for the bowlers. India chased down the target of 406 runs with 39 balls to spare, recording the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history, behind South Africa’s successful chase of 438 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
Gill and his opening partner Rohit Sharma got India off to a strong start in the run chase. While the Indian captain went on to notch up his second ODI double hundred, Rohit scored 101 off 75 balls. The duo helped India cross the 100-run mark in just 12 overs before upping the ante further.
Rohit raced to his fifty off just 32 balls, while Gill completed his half-century in 39 balls. The Indian skipper then switched gears to race to his century off just 62 deliveries. Thanks to the duo’s exploits, India brought up their 200 in just 21.1 overs, the fastest team double century in ODIs.
The duo took the West Indies bowlers to the cleaners, smashing them all around the park. Rohit was eventually dismissed on 101 off 75 balls, marking an end to a 255-run stand between the duo, the highest opening partnership in a run chase for India.
After Rohit’s dismissal, Gill combined with Virat Kohli (29) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (31*) to take India home comfortably with 39 balls to spare. The Indian skipper finished with a stunning 223 off 133 balls, laced with 26 fours and 8 sixes, shattering multiple records along the way.
