From Puneri Dhol to Visarjan procession: Thousands attend Bangkok’s grand Ganesha Mahotsav

Bangkok: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad Association Thailand hosted the 18th annual Ganesha Mahotsav, the country’s largest and most anticipated celebration of Lord Ganesha. The event, held at the iconic Nimibutr Stadium next to MBK Mall in central Bangkok, drew thousands of devotees from across Thailand and the Indian expatriate community.

A 10-foot idol of Lord Ganesha, crafted by artisans from India, formed the centrepiece of the celebrations. The idol, radiating joy and reverence, drew devotees in prayer and admiration.

Mahotsav stood out for its cultural performances

This year’s Mahotsav stood out for its cultural performances. Local associations presented regional traditions from across Bharat (India), while the highlight was the debut of Nadbrahma, a 15-member troupe from Pune. Known for their electrifying Puneri Dhol, the group’s thunderous beats and high-energy display ignited the stadium and left the audience enthralled.

The festivities culminated in the Visarjan procession, which wound through Bangkok’s busy commercial district before concluding at Sila Roek Park on Rama 3 Road. Hundreds of devotees, including many aboard a barge, joined in the symbolic immersion of the idol. The emotional farewell echoed with chants of “Ganapati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!” (Come back soon next year, Lord Ganesha).

One of Hinduism’s most revered deities

Over the years, the Mahotsav has inspired families and communities across Thailand to hold similar events, deepening appreciation for one of Hinduism’s most revered deities. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad Association Thailand said it remains committed to promoting cultural understanding and spiritual harmony through such celebrations.

The association has also urged media partners to continue covering the Mahotsav, helping to highlight the meaning of the traditions and strengthen cultural bridges.
