IIT to IAS Rajiv Verma: The Delhi government has appointed Rajiv Verma as the new Chief Secretary. The step will be effective from October 1 after the approval of the Union Home Ministry. Rajiv Verma, a senior IAS officer of 1992 batch Agmut cadre Rajiv Verma, will take command of the Delhi administration after Dharmendra retires. The story of Rajiv Verma is quite interesting. Originally hailing from Uttar Pradesh, he has done an M.Tech from IIT with a degree in Computer Science from Roorkee. After this, he passed the IAS examination and served in many important positions in Delhi and Central Government.
Rajiv Verma’s educational and administrative journey
Rajiv Verma’s journey is from IIT to Delhi’s top administrative post. At the age of 58, he is not unaware of the governance system of the capital. He served as Principal Secretary and Finance Commissioner in Delhi from 2018 to 2022. From 2017 to 2018, he was the Principal Commissioner in the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). From 2013 to 2017, he served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defense. Earlier, he has also served as Chairman and Managing Director and Joint Secretary in the Transport Department of Delhi. This long term has given him a deep experience of finance, housing, urban planning and policy making. This is why the authorities consider him suitable for handling Delhi’s administrative complex cases.
Big challenges in front of Delhi’s new Chief Secretary
Rajiv Verma has become the Chief Secretary of Delhi at a time when the city is struggling with many urban issues. Their first challenge will be the cleaning and revival of the Yamuna River. Both the central and state governments are monitoring the project. Apart from this, they will have to pay attention to matters like traffic, waste management, water supply and public transport. Rajiv Verma will work in a political environment where the BJP is controlled by the BJP, the Center and the Municipal Corporation.
