8th Pay Commission Salary Hike 2026: The Modi government has finally approved the next phase of the 8th Pay Commission. This decision will directly benefit about 47 lakh central employees and 68 lakh pensioners. The Central Government has approved the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the Commission, which means that now the process of salary increase has formally started. What is the 8th Pay Commission and when will it be implemented?
Once every 10 years, the Central Government forms a new Pay Commission, so that the salary, allowances and retirement benefits of government employees can be updated from time to time. The 7th Pay Commission came into effect from January 2016, so it is expected that the 8th Pay Commission will come into effect from January 2026.
What is the basis of salary increase?
The fitment factor for calculation of 8th Pay Commission has been estimated at 2.46. This means that compared to the 7th Pay Commission, the basic salary can increase by about 2.46 times. For example, if the basic salary of an employee is Rs 25,000, then after the 8th Pay Commission the same can increase to around Rs 61,500.

Who will benefit how much in the 8th Pay Commission?
- The salary of Clerk, Group-D, and Junior Assistants can increase from Rs 18,000 to Rs 44,000.
- The salary of Section Officer and Inspector level employees can go from Rs 44,000 to Rs 1.1 lakh.
- The basic salary of IAS, IPS and higher officers (level 13 to 18) can reach Rs 3 lakh to Rs 6 lakh.
What is the challenge before the government?
Implementing the recommendations of the Pay Commission will put a huge fiscal burden on the government. It is estimated that the 8th Pay Commission may impose an additional burden of more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore on the Center every year. But on the other hand, it will also work to revive the economy by increasing the spending power of employees.
When can I get increased salary in 8th Pay Commission?
If the process is completed on time, the new salary may be implemented from January 2026. The Commission has to submit its final report within 18 months and an interim report can also be submitted if needed.
