CJI Surya Kant Profile: Hailing from a small village in Hisar, Justice Surya Kant has achieved the highest position in the judiciary of the country. Will take oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India today. For the first time, Chief Justices of 7 countries will participate in his swearing-in.
53rd CJI Surya Kant Journey: Justice Surya Kant will take oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) today, Monday. The ceremony organized at Rashtrapati Bhavan is going to be historic. For the first time, Chief Justices of 7 countries will be present at the swearing in of a CJI. CJIs from Brazil, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Nepal will participate in this program with their delegations. Current judges of the Supreme Court will also be present. The tenure of current CJI BR Gavai has ended on 23 November. After this, Justice Surya Kant will take charge of the Supreme Court. His tenure will last till February 9, 2027.
Who is Justice Surya Kant?
Justice Surya Kant was born on 10 February 1962 in Petwad village of Hisar in Haryana. His early life was spent in a normal rural environment. After graduation from Hisar (1981), he did LLB from Rohtak in 1984 and LLM from Kurukshetra University in 2011. His legal career started in 1984 from the district court of Hisar. In 1985, he moved to Chandigarh and started practice in the Punjab-Haryana High Court.

Important decisions of Justice Surya Kant
In his career, Justice Surya Kant was a part of important benches in many constitutional and administrative cases. He was involved in more than 1000 decisions in the Supreme Court and High Court. This also includes the historic decision on Article 370 (2023). He was part of the Constitution bench that upheld the decision of the Central Government to remove special status from Jammu and Kashmir. While part of the full bench of the Punjab-Haryana High Court in the Dera violence case (2017), he ordered a complete cleanup of Dera Sacha Sauda in the wake of the violence following the conviction of Gurmeet Ram Rahim. He participated in the decision which banned the use of sedition law (IPC 124A) and directed not to register new FIRs till review. Apart from this, he also played an important role in 1/3rd reservation for women in bar associations, AMU minority status case, Pegasus spyware investigation and Bihar SIR case.
