French teenager faces jail in Singapore for licking vending machine straw

New Delhi: An 18-year-old French student is facing criminal charges in Singapore after a video showed him licking a straw from a public orange juice vending machine and returning it to the dispenser went viral. The clip, which was shared on social media, triggered widespread backlash and prompted authorities to act under the city-state’s strict public hygiene and nuisance laws.

Viral video sparks outrage and legal action

The teenager, identified as Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, allegedly filmed himself carrying out the act at a shopping centre in March before posting the video online with a caption suggesting the “city is not safe.” The footage quickly went viral, drawing strong public criticism and concerns over hygiene and safety.

Authorities subsequently charged him with mischief and public nuisance, with court documents stating he knew the act could cause annoyance and potential harm. The vending machine operator, iJooz, filed a police report and replaced all 500 straws in the machine as a precaution.

What charges he faces and possible punishment

Under Singapore law, the teen could face serious penalties if convicted. The mischief charge alone carries a possible jail term of up to two years, while the public nuisance offence could add further jail time or fines.

The student, who is studying at ESSEC Business School’s Singapore campus, has appeared in court and is expected to return for further hearings. His case has also prompted discussion about social media-driven stunts and Singapore’s strict enforcement of public order and hygiene rules.
