Fran Kirby has decided to retire from international football before the Women’s Euro 2025. The midfielder, who has been a key player for England over 11 years, earned 77 caps and was instrumental in their 2022 European Championship victory.
Initially planning to retire after the upcoming European Championship, Kirby moved her announcement forward after learning she wouldn’t be part of the final squad in Switzerland.
Kirby expressed her feelings about this decision, stating, “After being in the England team since I was 21, it’s time to close that chapter of my life.” She added that although she never wanted this day to come, she is immensely proud of her journey. Representing her country was a dream come true for her as a young girl. She cherishes the memories of playing with remarkable teammates and under exceptional managers in various tournaments.
Kirby is not alone in retiring before the tournament; goalkeeper Mary Earps also announced her retirement last week. Earps made this decision after losing her position as the number one goalkeeper to Hannah Hampton. Both players have had significant careers with England and have chosen to step back at this time.
The Brighton midfielder shared that her decision followed an emotional conversation with head coach Sarina Wiegman. Kirby told BBC Sport that she had been contemplating retirement for over a year, knowing it would be her last major tournament. Although initially planning to retire post-Euros, discussions with Wiegman led to an earlier announcement.
Kirby described the conversation with Wiegman as both painful and relieving. She said it felt like “a dagger to my heart,” yet also lifted a burden off her shoulders. Despite the emotional nature of their discussion, both respected each other’s perspectives on the situation.
Throughout her career, Kirby has played alongside some of the best players and participated in unforgettable tournaments. Her contributions have left a lasting impact on English women’s football, marking an end to an era filled with achievements and cherished moments.
